Unlike other draft coverage you will see, I will bring the perspective of a former NFL Scout who has sat in on draft meetings and been in the draft room during the draft. I can give you real reasons why teams will pass on certain players and why they selected others. In addition, I will not have the same thing to say about the players as all the other talking heads do throughout the draft.
As a former NFL Scout and current draft expert for The Sporting News, I offer you, the fans, the most comprehensive and thorough analysis of the prospects available for the NFL Draft in my annual draft publication, GM Jr's Guide to the NFL Draft ("The Guide"), online at The Sporting News war room site and in the annual Sporting News Pro Football Draft publication. GM Jr's Guide To The 2010 NFL Draft is in the works and will be available to customers in early April. The 2010 Guide will be sent via email as a pdf. Based upon my experience as an NFL Scout working with both the St. Louis Rams and Cleveland Browns, I know that the only way to provide truly accurate evaluations of prospects is to evaluate game film. To that end, my reports are based upon hundreds of hours of game film gathered directly from the various colleges all around the nation. As you will see from The Guide, my reports capture unique details from individual strengths, weaknesses to breakdown of position specific skills.
As a scout for the Cleveland Browns, I covered the Midwest section of the country for three years. As is reflected in my reports, this experience has enabled me to offer unique insights based on first hand experience. It is exactly this experience coupled with my proven ability to correctly evaluate prospect, that makes my evaluations both the most detailed and comprehensive in the industry. In addition, my contacts with the colleges, coaches, scouts and other NFL insiders, I am able to gather detailed information about players that very few can obtain, and is reflected in my reports.
Another unique characteristic of my book is the fact that I use an alphabetical/numerical scouting system to properly segment the players into specific groups. Due to the fact that there are many different types of college players wanting to join the NFL, it is key to have a grading system that takes into consideration each player's varying abilities. For example, I consider each player's physical and mental attributes and give each a particular letter grade. Then, I integrate a numerical grade that evaluates a player's level of skill. With these grades, an evaluator can easily categorize the players to ascertain their final draft ranking. Utilization of this particular scouting system makes my Draft Guide unique because no other draft guide uses such a detailed grading system.
Lastly, GM Jr ranks the quarterbacks using my self-developed Quarterback ("QB") rating system. This QB system has proven successful with many of my evaluations, most significantly Marc Bulger and Tom Brady. That is, in 2000, I rated Marc Bulger as a first round draft pick. Although Bulger was not selected until the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft and was released by two teams, he became the starting quarterback for the Rams in 2003 and won the MVP of the Pro Bowl. In addition, I rated Tom Brady as a third round draft pick who would become a good quarterback in the NFL. He has, since that time, confirmed my rating by winning three Super Bowls despite having been a 6th round draft pick.
Based upon my passion for the game, solid experience as a scout and unmatched ability to evaluate potential NFL players, my Draft Guide will not only provide valuable insight into players but helps identify which prospects will make it in the NFL. As the NFL Draft approaches you can hear me regularly on The Sporting News Radio Network as well as The Chris Myers Show on Fox Sports Radio and many other stations around the country.
